Top of the Class!

The end of year report for the school football team is simply that we have improved as the year has passed finishing with lots of gold stars.

We started the season competing at the Sports Village, Shrewsbury in the ESFA Small Schools Trophy, being eliminated at the second stage. Success in the County Small Schools Trophy also eluded us.

The start of our success began in March 2011 at The Venue, Oswestry in the Bicton 5 a-side Cup when we beat our old rivals Bomere Heath in the final.

At the Shropshire Olympian Festival held in Shrewsbury in June both boys and girls won the football competitions against opposition from both North and South Shropshire which was a tremendous achievement.

Who's That Girl!

Throughout the school year we competed in the Vic Roberts Village School League remaining undefeated in all games. The boys played some very good football but Sophie, the only girl to play in the school team, deserves a mention for her determination and tenacity.

Spot the Ball!!
These successes carried us in good heart and confident mood to the final at The Venue for the second time this year but this time in the Vic Roberts Village Schools League Cup finals day. After playing some wonderful passing football in a 5-0 victory over Bicton and then a 7-1 victory over a combined school team we faced Bomere Heath in the final for the third year running which saw us 3-2 victors.

Boys Do It Again!

I'm having this!

During this last academic year our boys competed at the Sports Centre at Sundorne in Shrewsbury in the ESFA Under 11 Boys Cup and the Under 11 Boys County Plate competitions. Unfortunately we did not progress too far in these two corn petitions, mainly due to a good standard of football being played by most schools. Greater success was had in the Under 11 Boys 6 aside Community Cup by qualifying through two group stages only to be eliminated on the final night. A special mention for Callum who hit his one and only goal of the season, but what a goal it was! The team was led by Harvey, this year’s outstanding footballer, ably assisted by regular players Billy, William, Callum, Ben and Dan who all leave us to further their education, hopefully both academic and sport, at the “big school”. Of course we mustn’t forget to mention the younger boys, William, Robbie and the two James’s who remain at the school and will form the backbone of next year’s team together with other younger boys.

Undoubtedly our greatest achievement during the last year was on the 17th June 2011 when we entered the Shropshire Olympian Festival. 1500 pupils from both North and South Shropshire schools were invited to take part in the re-creation of the Shropshire Olympian Festival, which was brought to Shrewsbury from Much Wenlock by William Penny Brookes in 1864.

The boys played some wonderful football during the tournament despite Harvey being injured, but other players stepped up their game, especially Billy, who had the goal scoring touch on the day. The final was a hard fought final against Ludlow, but we prevailed after a penalty shoot out in which our goalkeeper, William, made a vital save and our youngest player, Robbie, stepped up to blast the ball into the net for the winning penalty goal.

An excellent result and well done to all involved.
Well played boys!

Medal Mad Girls!

Shrewsbury Team

During this last academic year our girls have competed at the Sports Centre at Sundorne in Shrewsbury in the ESFA Under 11 Girls Cup and the Under 11 Girls County Plate corn petitions. Unfortunately we did not progress in the Cup competition but it may be because this was played on a very cold evening. However in the County Plate competition we were magnificent! We progressed through the first stage in September 2010 and the second stage in March 2011 without being defeated. Unfortunately the finals day at Shrewsbury School in April was another matter. Suffice it to say that we didn’t win the County Plate!
The team was led by Sophie, this year’s outstanding girl footballer, ably assisted by regular players Alice, Megan and Emma who all leave us at the end of this summer term. Of course we mustn’t forget to mention the younger girls, Emma, May, Lucy and Rachel who remain at the school who, together with younger girls, will discover the fun of playing football.
Despite the great achievement of reaching the Finals Day of the County Plate at Shrewsbury School we did even better on the 17th June 2011 when we entered the Shropshire Olympian Festival.

The girls played some good football throughout the tournament despite defender May being unable to play through illness. She was ably replaced in the squad by Lauren and Katie. Sophie had the goal scoring touch on the day and Emma was impressive in goal. The final was a hard fought final but we prevailed after a penalty shoot out in which Alice scored and goalkeeper Emma made a vital save that won the game.

Finally in June 2011 we took part in the Triumvirate Tournament with Bicton and Whittington. We were successful in winning both games for the third consecutive year, with a standard of play that the other schools were unable to match. An excellent result and well done to all involved.
